Lunar Eclipses

29 November 1993 : An eclipse of the moon. Sigma 400 mm f/5.6 APO, Fujichrome 400 film.

Lunar Eclipse of 9 January 2001 as seen from my home.

This image contains 9 exposures on a single medium format negative : 8 images of the moon and one for the windmill ("Abdijmolen" at Koksijde, Belgium). I made an exposure every 15 minutes as from mid-totality. While the totality images are exposed well, I did not compensate enough for the declining atmospheric transparancy (haze) during the partial fazes, which are under-exposed. Exposures of the moon varied from 8 s at f/4 to 1/125 s at f/22. The picture of the windmill was exposed two days later (8 s at f/3.5).

Equipment used :

Mamiya 645 1000S medium format camera on photo tripod;

Kodacolor Gold 400 ISO negative colour film;

Objective for the moon : Mamiya Sekor C 80 mm f/2.8;

Objective for the foreground : Russian "MIR 26" 45 mm f/3.5 + "Zörk" adapter;

The picture is a 13 cm x 18 cm print scanned with my HP Photosmart scanner.

The images below were made with the following equipment :

Pentax Z1 camera on Vixen GP equatorial mount;

Agfa Vista 400 ISO negative colour film;

Sigma 400 mm f/5.6 APO tele-objective with a Tamron-F SP 2x converter giving 800 mm focal length at f/11;

Negatives scanned with my HP Photosmart scanner.

Picture made around 20:28 UTC (7 minutes past mid-totality). 30 s exposure at f/11.

Picture made around 20:47 UTC (just before 3rd contact). 15 s exposure at f/11.

Picture made around 21:23 UTC. 1/30 s exposure at f/11, note the haze around the moon which caused a splendid moon-halo later that night.

This image was taken at 20:29 UTC using the same equipment  as for the images above and with a 30 second exposure.  It shows some stars which can be identified with their SAO number in the chart below, made with Megastar.  The time the picture was taken was derived from the fact that SAO 79421 was just occulted by the moon while SAO 79425 had not yet disappeared behind the moon's limb.
