I have to confess, i am not a sun photographer, but once in a while i take a shot. However i experienced two sun eclipses and these were absolutely wonderful! The first in 1999 in Northern France and the second in 2006 in Southeren Turkey.

My report on th 1999 eclips (in Dutch):

Of wij de zonsverduistering vanuit hun tweede huis in Frankrijk wilden bekijken? Dat tweede huis bleek vrijwel op de centrale lijn te liggen, in Aprémont, vlak bij Reims. Een buitenkans! De dagen voor de verduistering werd het weerbericht nauwlettend in de gaten gehouden. Want het huis kon zich dan wel op de centrale lijn bevinden, maar als verwacht werd dat er geen zon te zien zou zijn, dan moest het moest het toch een andere plaats worden! Hoeveel mensen werden verwacht? Zeker wel tien! Het werden er ruim 40, maar de vroegere pastorie had een grote zolder, die als slaapzaal werd gebruikt en de tuin bood verder plaats aan een vijftal grote tenten. 's Avonds voor de verduistering werd alvast stevig gedronken op de goede afloop. Ik heb te middernacht met een glas wijn in de linkerhand en een sterke zaklantaarn in de rechter om de sterren aan te wijzen, uitleg gegeven over de indrukwekkende sterrenpracht. En een vallende ster, wat is dat dan? En de melkweg? Men was een en al aandacht. De volgende dag was het totaal bewolkt. Onze Franse buurman kon er wel mee lachen. Wat was het tenslotte voor gekte om voor een verduisterde zon af te reizen naar Frankrijk? Hij wees af en toe lachend naar de donkere lucht. Hadden we misschien de avond daarvoor teveel lawaai gemaakt? Een aantal van ons besloot naar een heuveltop in de buurt af te reizen om een goed overzicht te hebben. Daar bevonden zich al enkele tientallen Fransen en Nederlanders. Onder meer twee amateurs uit Lyon met hun 30 cm Newtons. Zelf had ik een videocamera en een klein kijkertje mee. Het was nog steeds zwaarbewolkt, in de verte regende het zelfs. De hemel begon tergend langzaam op te klaren. Een kwartier voor de totaliteit werd het in het dal onder ons zonnig. Dit werd een tweetal van ons groepje teveel en ze reisden met haastige spoed af naar het dal. Wij hadden zoiets van "als je daar bent, kan de zon wel weer weg zijn". Enkele minuten voor de totaliteit was een smalle sikkel door de wolken te zien. Een gejuich steeg op. De wolken trokken langzaam weg en een halve minuut voor de totaliteit was de zon wolkenvrij. Het enthousiasme op de heuveltop kende geen grenzen. Er klonk applaus en gejuich. De totaliteit trad in. De een werd stil en de ander uitzinnig van vreugde. Onze Franse buren klapten in hun handen en riepen "bravo, bravo!" Mijn vrouw die zich alleen onder "dwang" een blik door mijn telescoop verwaardigt, raakt nu een dag later nog niet uitgepraat over dat vreemde licht aan de horizon en van de corona, de vreemde schaduwen, de plots intredende en uittredende duisternis, de gehele beleving daar op die heuveltop en wil nu ook de volgende eclips in Afrika meemaken. Zelf was ik geheel perplex van het beeld dat mijn kijkertje tijdens de totaliteit vertoonde. Had ik ooit iets mooiers gezien? De witte corona tegen de diepblauwe achtergrond en die vuurrode protuberansen langs de maanrand. Geweldig! Veel te gauw was de totaliteit weer over. Ik was geheel vergeten Venus en Mercurius op te zoeken. "Encore une fois?" grapten we met de Fransen om ons heen. "C'était superbe!" riepen de amateurs uit Lyon uitzinnig van vreugde. Hun gereserveerdheid van voor de eclips was geheel verdwijnen. We wisselden de adressen van onze websites uit. Dolgelukkige mensen daar op die heuveltop. Hoe gelukkig bleek ook na een minuut na de totaliteit. De zon verdween weer achter een dik wolkenpak. Terug in Aprémont was de totaliteit slechts de helft van de tijd te zien geweest. Enkelen hadden zich naar de rand van het dorp begeven om wat ruimer zicht te hebben, 200 m verderop. Zij hebben de zon helaas gemist. We bakten pannenkoeken op het dorpsplein. Het was zonnig, het was feest. Een passerende wielrenner werd een pannenkoek aangeboden, die hij gretig accepteerde. Een dorstige Franse automobilist vroeg of het een cafŽ betrof. Enkele uren later zaten we - op weg naar Nederland - urenlang in de file. Maar we ondergingen het met een glimlach. We hadden de totaliteit meegemaakt en dat konden ze ons niet meer afnemen! Enkele keren kwamen we in de urenlange wachtrij voor Luik langszij bekenden uit Aprémont. Het stapvoetse verkeer maakte een praatje mogelijk en veraangenaamde de wachttijd.

The 2006 Eclips: The reason of our week holiday in Turkey was the solar eclips on Wednesday march 29th. We had experienced this in 1999 in Northern France and that was such a unique event that we immediately after that, started to plan for the solar eclipse in 2006. We were a group of 26 people, all with the same goal, we went for a week and the other days we made excursions from Antalya on, where we stayed. On Sunday we drove around in our bus to explore the surroundings and find a good place for Wednesday. We were at the waterfall in Manavgat, had lunch in Side and were on the beach in Belek. Was that a good place for Wednesday? Later on we decided to stay on the roof terrace of our hotel, the view was good and we were a bit afraid for traffic jams on that day. After Belek the bus drove us to Antalya city; big, but also nice, esp. the Old Town with its many small shops and in the background we saw the snow covered mountains. Monday we had a jeep safari, first to Silyon, an old ruins from the 11th century before Chr. on a hilltop, that was our first meeting with the old culture in Turkey. Then on in the jeeps, we were 4 of them, sometimes it sure was exciting, then a jeep no more drove on and we had to wait for some time, on small, winding, steep gravel paths, sometimes a bit scary, and driving through brooks and small rivers. Our lunch was in a fish restaurant in Gebiz, at a trout farm, when we arrived the fish was caught and 15 minutes later on we had our lunch. It couldn't be more fresh!!! kid in a candy store ..... Tuesday to Perge, Aspendos and the Kursunlu waterfall. Both antique cities were founded after the Trojan war. In Aspendos we were in a marvellous theater which still was in a very good state, the best wellkept theater in the world of the antiquity and with a very good acoustics. And then Wednesday, 29th, THE DAY. Fortunately it was a blue sky, no clouds!!!1 At about 11 o'clock the first ones went to the roof terrace already to set up their foto and film cameras. At about 12.35 it started, the moon started to cover the sun and after 5 quarters of an hour, at 13.55 the sun had disappeared totally behind the moon; in that time it had got really colder, about 10 degrees Celsius, the light changed to sallow. More and more people came to watch it also on the boulevard, but it did not get really crowded. The moon covered the sun more and more and at 13.55 the totality is full. It has got noticeable darker, we can see the planet Venus well. A very unreal sphere, the horizon has coloured pink and through the binoculars we clearly see the corona and also some protuberances, small solar flares. Everybody is excited, it indeed is so beautiful and amazing, but the emotion I felt the first time in 1999 is less now. Anyhow, it remains a unique experience and I cannot understand that some cars just drive on during those 3,5 minutes lasting totality., without stopping and watching it. All too soon it is over, suddenly we see a small bright spot, immediately followed by the so-called diamant ring and then it is over again. Such a pity. It still lasts 5 more quarters of an hour before the sun is totaly to see again, but only a few people stay on to watch that. We anyhow feel excited the rest of the day. Thursday we first went to a big week market in Manavgat and there we also bought special solar-eclipse stamps. Then on to the Kopruly-canyon. The road to the canyon and the canyon itself are so beautiful, this area is one of the most beautiful mountain areas in Turkey. Many people who go to Turkey only go to the beach, but the hinterland surely is worth while, very beautiful. That evening we went to see a Turkish evening, with a belly dancers , music etc. Friday a boat cruise on the sea and we could see the many hotels and flat buildings alongside the coast, many, many kilometers. And Saturday our holiday was over already again, Arie was interviewed on the radio (live) on the saturday morning we left: why did he go one week to Turkey for just 3,5 minutes........ We have seen the solar eclips, that was the most important, but we also had a nice week holiday and we got to know another part of Turkey this time. Cocky Nagel
