Comet was discovered by E.W.L. Tempel of the Brera Observatory, Milan, Italy on 1873 july 4.04. He described it as faint, with a slow southern motion, nor further observations are possible on the 4-the, but Tempel again saw the comet on the 5-the. He remarked that it was brighter than expected and exhibited a coma of diameter 5’.  The comet was already past perihelion when discovered, but continuing approaching the Earth as July progressed.

Comet Tempel was recovered in 1878 by Tempel himself on July 19 of that year. A. Winnecke made an independent recovery as well.
