Comet 173P/MUELLER - GARY W. KRONK’s Cometography

Discovery:

Jean Mueller reports her discovery of a comet on a plate taken with the 1.2-m Oschin Schmidt Telescope in the course of the second Palomar Sky Survey.  The object is diffuse, of mag 17.5-18, with a pronounced tail about 80" long toward p.a. 270°.  Confirmation was obtained via a second plate taken by J. D. Mendenhall and Mueller. ( IAUC 5891 )  it had been already discovered as an asteroid 1992 YF5, about 1 year before discovered as a comet in 1993 as comet 1993/W1. It had been bright as 17 mag for about 2 years before the perihelion passage in 1994 September. However, the final observation was in 1995 February just after the perihelion passage. It had never been observed after that in spite of the good condition. It was so faint as 21 mag at the final observation, although it was nuclear magnitude.

Recovery:

Apparition of 2008: The comet was recovered on three images acquired with the 1.5-m reflector by E. J. Christensen (Mt. Lemmon Survey, Arizona, USA) during 2005 October 7.44-7.45. The magnitude was given as 18.0, the condensed coma was 8" across, and there was a curved tail extending 20" in PA 250-280 degrees. The comet peaked at a brightness of 16-17 at the beginning of 2007
