COMET C/2020 M5 (ATLAS)

An apparently asteroidal object discovered on CCD images taken on 2020 June 30 UT with a 0.5-m f/2 Schmidt reflector at Mauna Loa, Hawaii, in the course of the "Asteroid Terrestrial-Impact Last Alert System" (ATLAS) search program has been found to show cometary appearance by CCD astrometrists elsewhere.  The discovery observations are tabulated below, along with very faint pre-discovery observations identified by R. Weryk, Institute for Astronomy, University of Hawaii, in images obtained with the Pan-STARRS1 1.8-m Ritchey-Chretien reflector at Haleakala; Weryk notes that the object was too faint in 2019 to reliably tell if it showed cometary morphology, and the G-band magnitudes are estimated as +/- 0.4.  Note that this comet is designated C/2020 M5, after the designation "A/2020 M4" was given to an apparently asteroidal 22nd-magnitude object that was observed over a month and that has orbital elements T = 2020 Nov. 23, q = 5.95 AU, e = 0.999, and i = 160 degrees (cf. MPEC 2020-O13).

E. Guido, Castellammare di Stabia, Italy, found a compact coma about 7" in diameter and of mag 18.9-19.3, in 108 stacked unfiltered 60-s exposure taken bij E.Guido, A. Catapano, A. Noschese, with a 0.5-m f/8 Ritchey- Chretien reflector at the Osservatorio Salvatore di Giacomo in Agerola, Pianillo, Italy. additional in ninety additional 60-s unfiltered exposures taken by Guido and Catapano on July 3.0 found he a compact coma about 7" in diameter with mag 18.9.

H. Sato, Tokyo, Japan, writes that ten stacked 60-s exposures taken on July 2.44 remotely with a 0.61-m f/6.5 astrograph located at the Sierra Remote Observatory near Auberry, CA, USA, show a strongly condensed coma 8" in diameter and not tail; the magnitude was 18.9 as measured within a circular aperture of radius 5".0. The available astrometry appear on MPEC 2020-O30.
