This comet was discovered by R. Weryk and Y. Ramanjooloo, Institute for Astronomy, University of Hawaii, comet was found in four 45-s w-band CCD images obtained with the Pan-STARRS1 1.8-m Ritchey-Chretien reflector at Haleakala, Hawaii, on Oct. 22 ; Weryk notes that the discovery images show a tail about 4" long toward p.a. 220 degrees with a diffuse coma having size 2".1 (full-width-at-half-maximum) in 1".3 seeing. Weryk also identified four 45-s w-band pre-discovery Pan-STARRS1 images taken on Sept. 25.6 that show no tail but a diffuse coma of size about 2".6 (FWHM) in 1".5 seeing. Also, prediscovery detections were located on Mount Lemmon Survey images. This object was assigned as comet C/2020 U5 (PANSTARRS) by CBET 4881 issued on 2020 oct. 29.
