Comet C/2025 Y1 (ATLAS) (astro.vanbuitenen.nl)

Discovery:   CBET 5651:  A/2025 Y1 + CBET 5671:  COMET C/2025 Y1 (ATLAS)

An apparently asteroidal object discovered on CCD images taken on 2025 Dec. 26 UT with a 0.5-m f/2 Schmidt reflector at Haleakala, Hawaii, in the course of the "Asteroid Terrestrial-Impact Last Alert System" (ATLAS) search program has been given the designation A/2025 Y1 when announced by the Minor Planet Center on MPEC 2026-A16 after it was posted to its PCCP webpage, with no reports of cometary activity despite its near-parabolic orbit.

The object A/2025 Y1 (cf. CBET 5651) has been found to show cometary appearance.  T. Prystavski (Lviv, Ukraine) writes that images obtained remotely with an iTelescope 0.51-m f/6.8 Corrected Dall-Kirkham telescope located at Rio Hurtado, Chile, on 2026 Jan. 30.35 and 31.34 UT show a tail  about 7" long in p.a. about 280 degrees, showing a distinct teardrop shape, though a coma is not clearly visible; the total magnitude was given as 17.8.   Additional observations obtained by Prystavski on Feb. 15.3 yield total mag  17.5 with a condensed coma and a tail approximately 0'.1 long in p.a. 279degrees.  Additional CCD images by Prystavski on Feb. 28.3 show a 0'.2-long tail in p.a. 286 degrees (total mag 17.1)

There were 8 reports of cometary activity. ( MPEC 2026-F33: COMET C/2025 Y1 (ATLAS) )

The first report was by M. Serra-Ricart.  There were 4 reports of a coma and there were 6 reports of a tail.  Details are provided in the table below.
