Discovery

Joe Montani, Lunar and Planetary Laboratory, reports the discovery of a comet with the Spacewatch 0.9-m telescope at Kitt Peak.  J. Larsen assisted with the observations on 1997 Apr. 9.  The measurements below are by Montani (Apr. 9, showing a tail extending for 2' from the coma in p.a. 285 deg) and by J. V. Scotti (Apr. 10, coma diameter 10", tail extending 1'.3 in p.a. 284 deg).  On Apr. 10.122 UT, m2 = 21.4.  Comet was assigned as P/1997 G1 (MONTANI) via IAUC 6622  issued on 1997 April 10.  It is a distant object, with a perihelion distance of 4.3 AU and will not become any brighter

Recovery :

Terry Bressi and A F Tubbiolo  has recovered comet 1997 G1 (P/Montani)  on 2014 October 13.31 at the Steward Observatory, Kitt Peak  with the 0.9m reflector.  [CBET 4005, MPEC 2014-U63, 2014 October 25]  The perihelion date was by chance in good agreement with that given in the Section predictions for 2016, which used the predicted value of T for the equinox of date in 2014 May, and around 1.2 days earlier than those published for the equinox of perihelion.
