IAUC 9134 : COMET C/2010 G2 (HILL)

R.E. Hill discovered an 18.5m bright comet in the constellation Hercules, near the border of the Serpent Bearer, on Catalina Sky Survey images taken on 10 April 2010. Comet C/2010 G2 (Hill) exhibited a diffuse, 6-8" coma and a 20" long fan-shaped tail at p.a. Of 200°. It will pass through its perihelion in early September 2011 with a predicted brightness of magn. 12. On the night of 15-16 May, the comet will pass the North Pole at a distance of only 1.5°, at which time it will be only 0.7° from Polaris. Brighter than 14th magnitude it will be from March 2011 until the end of 2011. During this period it will move through the constellations of Dragon, Cepheus, Cassiopeia, Giraffe, Lynx, Wagon, Gemini/Taurus, Orion into Eridanus. Most of the time it will be a morning sky object. Only towards the end of its visibility for central Europe will it be a night and finally evening sky object. The comet moves on an orbit with an orbital period of about 950 years ( MPEC 2010-L69).
