Discovery:

IAUC nr.9193, issued on 2011, Jan. 17, announced the discovery of a new comet (magnitude roughly 18) by A. R. Gibbs through the Catalina 0.68-m Schmidt telescope, on images obtained on 2011, Jan. 15.5. The new comet has been designated C/2011 A3 (GIBBS).  Alex Gibbs discovered an 18th magnitude comet on Catalina Sky Survey images taken with the 0.68-m Schmidt telescope on January 15.51. The comet was at perihelion at 2.3 AU in December.   Visual observers picked up the comet in August when it was already 11th magnitude and it was about 10th magnitude as it headed towards conjunction in October.
