Discovery:  CBET 4501: 20180328 : COMET C/2018 C2 (LEMMON)

An apparently asteroidal object found on CCD observations taken on 2018 Feb. 5 in the course of the Mount Lemmon Survey with the 1.5-m reflector has been found to show a broad, faint tail about 10" long toward the west on two 60-s r-band exposures taken on Mar. 22.64 UT with the 3.6-m Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope at Mauna Kea by K. Meech, J. Kleyna, J. V. Keane, and D. Woodworth (measured and reported by M. Micheli).

Micheli adds that the coma is only marginally extended (full-width-at-half- maximum of 0".9, vs. 0".9 for nearby stars); the magnitude was measured to be 17.6-17.7.

The available astrometry (including earlier Mt. Lemmon observations from Jan. 28.43-28.50 UT, when the magnitude was given as 20.3-21.0), the following slightly hyperbolic orbital elements by G. V. Williams (from 216 observations spanning Jan. 28-Mar. 24; mean residual 0".3), and an ephemeris appear on MPEC 2018-F136.
