Discovery:

in the course of the "Asteroid Terrestrial-Impact Last Alert System" (ATLAS) search program, was an apparently asteroidal object found on images taken on 2019 Oct. 6.6 UT with a 0.5-m reflector at Mauna Loa, Hawaii,  CCD astrometrists elsewhere found cometary activity after the object was posted on the Minor Planet Center's PCCP webpage

R. Weryk, Institute for Astronomy, University of Hawaii, reports finding pre-discovery images of C/2019 T3 on Pan-STARRS images taken at Haleakala, Hawaii, with the 1.8-m reflectors on 2019 Jan. 17.4 (Pan-STARRS1; very condensed with magnitude 20.7-20.8; slight asymmetry to the south, suggesting a short, straight tail in p.a. 180 degrees; full-width-at-half-maximum about 1".5 in 1".0 seeing) and on Jan. 27.4 (Pan-STARRS2; mag 20.5-21.3; marginal images).  Weryk adds that i-band Pan-STARRS1 exposures taken on Oct. 15.5 show a condensed coma of diameter 1".8 in 1".2 seeing, with a straight 8" tail in p.a. 220 deg.  Thirty stacked 60-s unfiltered images taken by G.Favero and R. Furgoni with a 0.80-m f/4 reflector at the Osservatorio del Celado, Castello Tesino, Italy, on Oct. 10.8 show an elongation and a faint tail about 15" long in p.a. 200 deg; the red magnitude was measured to be 18.1.

The available astrometry has been published on MPEC 2019-U10.  The comet will pass 3.30 AU from Jupiter on 2022 Mar. 26 and 2.29 AU from Saturn on 2023 June 2 UT. ( CBET 4678 )
